This will be my 7th mission to Vietnam with the International Extremity Project. At the beginning of the mission in Can Tho, I will work with the IEP surgical and support team to help organize patient information. After patient screening, I shift to working with pediatricians and therapy clinicians in pediatric hospitals in both Can Tho and Ho Chi Minh City.
During this 2023–24 mission, I'll be working with a Can Tho pediatrician to evaluate children, develop and model treatment recommendations, and counsel parents who are concerned about their child’s development. In Ho Chi Minh City, I'll work with the pediatric hospital staff to develop treatment plans for young autistic children and use play and technology to support their communication development.
I keep returning to Vietnam with IEP because of the wonderful relationships with IEP team members and the strong and productive relationships with the Vietnamese clinical professionals. Working with children, families, and professionals in Vietnam is an amazing way to understand a rapidly changing country and have a direct effect on the lives of children and their families.
