Setting Up for Successful Surgeries

We bring many of the supplies we need for surgery with us for each mission. Months before each trip, we start working with organizations like MedShare to acquire the supplies required to perform life-changing surgeries. The supplies we can't source through donations, we purchase and bring with us. Each person who flies from SFO can bring one piece of personal luggage and is assigned a tote at the airport. This year, we had 25 totes weighing up to 50 pounds each, full of medical supplies.

Some of these supplies include:

  • surgical instruments
  • bone wedges and putty
  • sutures
  • surgical staples
  • fixation sets and k-wires
  • sterile gloves
  • casting material
  • post-operative boots
And, of course, toys and candy for the kids (and nursing staff 😉)!

Once we arrive at the hospital on screening day, we have to convert 25 boxes full of supplies into an organized supply room. Everything has to be easy to find and quickly accessible in case a patient case needs it in the middle of a procedure. We remove everything from the boxes and arrange it by supply type, instrument size, bone putty or wedge, etc.

While the doctors and residents did the patient screening, Jenni and Madison (our stellar nursing team) took on the stacks of boxes. With help from Lex, Logan, and Noah, they converted everything into a usable and organized supply room in just three hours. Everything is ready for use on our first day of surgery on January 2.

If we need Lex during a procedure,
we'll know exactly where to find him.
