Logan Lehnert, a senior Biology/Pre-Dental student at Colby College in Maine, is a driven scholar-athlete. He currently ranks third all-time among varsity pole vaulters on the Colby track and field team.
His passion for medicine and service began early: He has been an integral part of the International Extremity Project (IEP) medical missions since 2012.
Starting with fundraising efforts and logistical support, Logan quickly took on greater responsibilities, including managing operating room inventory, handling photographic documentation, and scribing for doctors during screenings. Over the past several missions, he has worked closely with nurses and surgeons in the operating room, gaining valuable experience and training to set up sterile surgical tables and assist in procedures.
In July 2025, Logan participated in his first dental mission in Cebu, Philippines, with the Rise Above Foundation. There, he served as a sterilization technician and chairside dental assistant, further deepening his clinical experience and commitment to global oral health.
Now, he is taking his dedication to the next level. As he prepares for dental school, he is spearheading IEP’s first-ever dental mission to Bhutan, collaborating with esteemed dentistry faculty from the University of California, San Francisco.
This new dental initiative in Bhutan marks a significant expansion of IEP’s global health efforts. The team is launching a nationwide program to enhance dental health surveillance in Bhutan. The project includes:
- Training local dental teams in periodontal assessment techniques aligned with the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) standards
- Calibrating clinicians for consistent data collection
- Compiling real-world clinical data to better understand the country’s oral health landscape
Through a combination of lectures, hands-on training, and clinical work, the mission aims to equip Bhutanese dental professionals with critical skills in periodontal care and documentation. The team will also conduct follow-up studies using existing dental records and radiographs to help guide future oral health strategies.
