The International Extremity Project (IEP) is thrilled to expand its global health efforts with a new initiative. In 2025, during IEP's first foot and ankle medical mission to Bhutan, the team will introduce a dental component to its outreach.

Leading this endeavor is Logan Lehnert, a pre-dental student at Colby College and a dedicated IEP member since 2012. He has assembled a skilled team, including Dr. Richard Kao from the University of California, San Francisco.

We are launching a nationwide effort in Bhutan to enhance dental health surveillance. Our project includes:
  • Training dental teams in periodontal assessment methods based on U.S. Center for Disease Control standards
  • Calibrating clinicians for accurate data collection
  • Gathering real-world clinical information to better understand the population's needs
Through a mix of lectures, hands-on training, and clinical practice, we aim to equip dental professionals with essential skills in periodontal care and documentation. This initiative will also involve follow-up studies using existing dental records and radiographs to improve future oral health strategies.

Efforts are underway to secure essential equipment and raise charitable funds to support the project. Stay tuned as our plans to advance periodontal health across Bhutan evolve.
